Deaf Ethnic Women’s Association provides a range of support and empowers Minority Ethnic Deaf women to have choice and control in their lives and understand their rights without compromising their identity. To achieve this, they provide advice on health, benefits, housing, childcare and sign language interpreters.
The Trust awarded a grant of £9,000 through The National Lottery Community Fund to run a 6-week programme of online training sessions on women’s financial rights and empowerment for Deaf women on low incomes from BAME backgrounds. This included the employment of a Project Worker and Tablet loan scheme for women lacking access to equipment.
“Deaf Ethnic Women very much appreciated the workshops and it is something that has helped to fill in the gaps. For me realising how much more it is needed, the issues are much greater than I expected so we will try find more funds to carry on and educate/support more women. Smallwood has made this happen so thank you.” (Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq, Chair of Trustees)
